Dr Yee grew up in Canada and migrated to Australia in 2002 after being accepted to study medicine at The University of Adelaide. Before being accepted to study medicine, he was also offered to study software engineering at Queens University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada). However, he chose to study medicine because he was drawn to people and their individual stories.
Graduating from the University of Adelaide in 2008, Dr Yee pursued a surgical career and completed five years of surgical training in Australia and Canada. During this time, he worked as a spinal surgical registrar at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, participating in the state-wide on-call service for spinal injuries and trauma.
Only some people choose to leave surgical training. Despite his professional success, Dr Yee couldn’t help but notice that many of his older colleagues were divorced and estranged from their children. So, Dr Yee forged a different path. He retrained as a specialist procedural GP and completed further subspecialty training in skin cancer and spinal medicine. In addition to holding a Master of Medicine from the University of Queensland, he serves as a Senior Lecturer for the University of Queensland Master of Medicine (Skin Cancer) Program, alongside additional subspecialty training through the AO Spine Foundation. His previous surgical training has not gone to waste. Because of this, Dr Yee can support his patients throughout their journey, offering both surgical and non-surgical treatments for skin cancer and spinal conditions.
He enjoys his time outside work. His hobbies include running, fishing, photography, computing, cooking and, of course, spending time with his family.
Dr Yee has strong research interests in both skin cancer and spinal medicine, continously reflecting to improve patient outcomes and their individual journeys.
His most recent work focuses on how clinicians can better incorporate artificial intelligence in skin cancer diagnosis and surveillance. He has previous research publications in spinal, orthopaedic and paediatric surgery.
