What happens during a skin check?

Consultation

Dr Yee will ask about:

  • Any new or changing spots or moles
  • Your medical history, including any previous skin cancers
  • Your family history relevant to skin cancer
  • Lifestyle factors that may affect your skin cancer risk, such as working outdoors.
Examination

Dr Yee may:

  • Conduct a full skin check, examining your skin and hair with magnified vision and a dermatoscope. A chaperone is available on request.
  • Photograph any suspicious moles or lesions to aid monitoring
  • Recommend total body photography, which can be particularly useful for patients with multiple moles or a higher risk profile.
Findings and next steps

After examining you, Dr Yee will explain his findings and recommendations. These may include:

  • Advice on sun-safe practices to reduce skin cancer risk
  • A plan for monitoring concerning lesions
  • Biopsy of a suspicious lesion to confirm if skin cancer is present
  • Surgical removal of a specific lesion, lipoma or cyst
  • Referral to relevant specialists if needed.
Dr Joshua Yee - When to book an appointment

When to book an appointment

A skin cancer assessment may be appropriate if you notice a spot that:

  • Is new or looks different from your other spots
  • Has changed in size, shape or colour
  • Itches, bleeds, weeps or does not heal
  • Has become rough, scaly or raised
  • Has returned despite previous treatment.

Regular skin checks may also be worthwhile for people with a personal or family history of skin cancer, numerous or atypical moles, significant past sun exposure, fair skin, or a suppressed immune system.

You do not need a GP referral to book a skin cancer appointment with Dr Yee. However, a referral can still provide useful information about previous treatment, pathology results and relevant medical history.

Skin cancer procedures

Dr Yee’s background in both general practice and surgery enables him to provide expert and holistic care across the skin cancer pathway, from initial assessment to surgical removal if needed.

Most moles do not need to be removed but, if yours does, Dr Yee has the necessary skills and experience to perform:

  • Skin cancer biopsies
  • Excisions of concerning lesions or confirmed skin cancers
  • Removal of cysts and lipomas.

Depending on patient preference, procedures can be performed onsite in the dedicated procedural room or through an accredited day surgery hospital.

For more complex lesions requiring more specialised input, Dr Yee can expedite a referral to his network of oncologists and plastic surgeons. Often, they would prefer a tissue diagnosis, clinical and dermatoscopic photos prior to review to allow more accurate treatment. To prevent fragmentation in care, your usual GP will be included in this process to allow ongoing continuity of care.
